You’ve heard your friends talking about the incredible results they’ve experienced with Pilates for years. You’ve stalked a number of Pilates instructors on Instagram and maybe have even tried following along to a video or two from Youtube. You’ve even gone so far as to find a beautiful boutique Pilates studio to attend (that’s VIPilates, of course!) and now you’re ready to attend your first session! Here’s exactly what to expect when you start Classical Pilates.

what to expect when you start Pilates

Expect a warm welcome

At VIPilates, we pride ourselves on our friendly staff and our welcoming environment. When you arrive at our studio, leave your personal belongings in one of our secure lockers, grab a freshly laundered towel that we provide for your use and relax whilst you wait for your session to begin. We know you’ll feel at home in our bright, beautiful studio.

Please remember to not wear jewellery during your session as this can get caught in the apparatus and damage them or can cause injury to yourself. No food is allowed in the studio, either, but you are encouraged to bring a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated. What you wear to your session is important – please avoid baggy, loose clothing which could also get trapped in the apparatus. Instead, opt for clothing that allows you to stretch easily.

Expect expert guidance

Our staff of classically trained instructors are there to guide you every step of the way. Whether you are attending a group class or have booked in a private or duet session, you’ll receive instruction tailored to you. Our instructors will ensure you are performing each exercise accurately and will be on hand to provide support where needed. Combined, our instructors have almost 30 years experience in teaching Pilates – you’ll be in great hands in our studio and won’t have anything to worry about!

Expect to take it slowly

There’s a lot to learn when you first start Pilates. There’ll be new terminology, new ways of breathing and new ways of relating to your body. It’s completely normal if you don’t catch on straight away. Just remember to be gentle with yourself and expect to take things slowly; you’ll get there in the end with determination and with the help and support of our dedicated team.

It’s important to remember that Pilates is about the connection between your mind and your body. It will take time to hone this connection and for everything to click into place. The good thing is this isĀ your practice. You can go at your own pace. There’s no need for comparing yourself to anyone else in the studio; your Pilates experience is unique and individual to you.

Expect to feel differently

The creator of the Pilates method, Joseph Pilates said it best: ‘In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference; in 20, you’ll see the difference and in 30, you’ll have a new body.’ Your body will feel differently as you awake muscles you’ve probably not used in a long time. It will feel differently as you use the apparatus and devices to get leaner and to ease into poses. But one of the beautiful things about Pilates is that that difference follows you outside of the studio. The results of your hard work in your session will be recognisable when you’re going about your daily life, performing everyday activities. Pilates isn’t just an exercise programme, it’s a way of life!

We cannot wait to see you in our studio! We know you will have a positive experience and we are eager to share the joys and benefits of Pilates with you and help you achieve your goals. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns! If you’d like, you can spend some time getting to know each of our instructors by visiting our Meet the Team page, too!
